Trinity College students clean up

A group of UWA Trinity College students volunteered to spend some of their orientation week energy at a big beach clean up on Cottesloe main beach thismorning. It was hot work down there on the beach collecting rubbish but you can see from the photos on FLICKR that we all had a good time! A refreshing swim after the work was done was really enjoyed by everyone!
We were all astonished, yet again, by the numbers of cigarette butts discarded on the beach. Butts take many years to break down and are full of all sorts of toxins - so we plead with all the smokers out there to PLEASE dispose of butts in the bins provided. Thanks to everyone involved in today's clean up and best wishes to all the students, who come from all over WA and from across the globe, for a great year at UWA. Thanks too to Jade Hankin, Cottesloe's Sustainability Officer, for decking us all out in sturdy gloves and providing the zinc for our noses. (click on photo to enlarge)

Medal for Coastcare hero

After the story here on our blog last week about Doug Mickle (and his many years of voluntary beach-cleaning work) the Post Newspaper contacted me. I arranged for them to meet up with Doug at Cottesloe beach today.

Kate Sputore, our North Metro Coastcare officer is so impressed with Doug's work that she was keen to present him with a Coastcare Local Hero medal and a bag of Coastcare goodies, at the same time today.
